Man Arrested After Fatal Massachusetts Car Accident
People have certain responsibilities to one another. At the most basic level, people must ensure that their behavior does not pose a health or safety risk to others. If it does, aid should be rendered. However, police in Massachusetts claim that a man fled the scene of a car accident after he fatally struck a young girl riding her bike.
The deceased victim, an 8-year-old girl, was riding her bike with her 12-year-old male cousin. Police accounts indicate that the two young people were struck by a car driven by a 45-year-old man. It is suspected that the man was speeding at the time of the accident. Both victims were transported to the hospital. While the young boy is expected to survive, the girl died as a result of the injuries she suffered.
Police also claim that the driver fled the scene. He was reportedly discovered hiding in a closet in his home. He has now been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and motor vehicle homicide. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail.
While the criminal justice system will determine what punishment — if any — is appropriate, the families of the young victims are likely left facing a potentially insurmountable mountain of medical bills. The family of the young woman will additionally have to cope with funeral expenses. To help with costs stemming from a car accident, many people turn to a Massachusetts civil court for legal recourse. A successfully presented case could result in a monetary award that would help with unexpected expenses stemming from an accident caused by another’s negligence.
