Fire and Explosion at Greater Nashua Mental Health Building on Amherst Street in Nashua Left Three People Injured

NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE (February 2, 2026) – At least three people were injured in a Nashua gas explosion at a commercial property at 440 Amherst Street.

Hillsborough County officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:15 PM on Monday. Roughly 40 people were working inside of the Greater Nashua Mental Health building when there was a report of a gas leak.

Firefighters were called to the scene of the accident to assess the situation. At some point during that investigation, there was an explosion in the building.

A large number of people had to be evacuated from the building. In total, at least three people were injured and taken to local area hospitals.

It remains unclear what may have caused the gas leak. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Who is Liabile for Gas Explosions, Like the One in Nashua?

Property owners in New Hampshire have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This requires that they are compliant with all fire and safety codes throughout their building. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their property, they must take action. Failing to take action could be construed as negligence. There are many ways that a property owner may have acted negligently prior to a gas explosion.

  • Maintenance: A property owner may have failed to perform regular inspections and maintenance on gas lines.
  • Warnings: A property owner may have ignored red flags related to their gas systems.
  • Repairs: A property owner may have used unlicensed or unqualified contractors that made improper repairs on key systems.
  • Ventilation: A property owner may have allowed gas to build up by failing to maintain ventilation systems.

Gas explosions tend to be very complex events. The factors that can contribute to any gas explosion may take place hours, days, or even weeks beforehand. Depending on the facts of any case, there could be multiple liable parties for any gas explosion. This includes the company responsible for providing any location with natural gas. They may have failed to maintain their lines in a safe condition or perform needed repairs.

Steps to Take After Nashua Gas Explosions

Gas leaks can be incredibly dangerous and are involved in many serious accidents every year. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “During 2018–2022, there was an estimated annual average of 15,941 reported structure fires where the material in the item first ignited was a flammable gas. These fires caused an estimated 191 civilian deaths, 747 civilian injuries, and $402 million in property damage each year. An estimated 10,774 fires occurred in homes and 5,166 occurred in non-home structures each year.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any gas explosion.

  • Treatment: Seeking medical treatment is an important first step after any gas explosion. Failing to seek treatment can cause major legal and health implications down the road.
  • Eyewitnesses: People who may have witnessed the accident or have information should be interviewed as soon as possible while their memories are still fresh.
  • Legal Support: Victims of gas explosions should contact an experienced Nashua personal injury attorney. An attorney can play a critical role in helping victims get the medical and financial support that they need to recover.

Gas explosions are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where fire safety codes are not being followed. Unfortunately, property owners and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility if someone is injured in a gas explosion. This is why it’s so important that these incidents are investigated by an outside party. Any person who is injured in a gas explosion may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim.
