WRENTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS (August 5, 2025) – A man has tragically died in a Wrentham motorcycle accident with a semi truck along Route 1 not far from Washington Street.

Norfolk County officials are saying that the accident took place around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. The tractor-trailer collided with the motorcyclist for undetermined reasons.

Paramedics and police officials were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. When troopers arrived at the scene, he was unresponsive in the roadway.

Despite life-saving efforts, the motorcyclist was later pronounced dead. Massachusetts State Police identified Paul Caouette, 72, as the man killed in the crash. A full investigation into the Wrentham truck accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Wrentham Truck Accidents

Many truck accidents are due to truck drivers making unsafe left turns into the path of motorcyclists. Pursuant to Title XIV, Chapter 89, Section 8, the driver of any vehicle attempting to turn left at an intersection or into an alley must first ascertain that the turn can be made with reasonable safety. They must yield the right-of-way to any driver approaching from the opposite direction that is close enough to pose a hazard. Truck companies should take several actions to prevent collisions.

  • Driver Training: Truck drivers should undergo comprehensive safety training. This should include training for defensive driving and fatigue management.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Commercial trucks have a high utilization rate. These vehicles must be routinely inspected and well maintained to operate safely.
  • Route Planning: Truck routes should be optimized to avoid high-risk areas and reduce as many left turns as possible.

Truck drivers are typically required to get a commercial driver’s license. They must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. When truck drivers fail to uphold their duty of care, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The company that a truck driver worked for could also bear legal responsibility. As a general rule, employers are vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties.

Common Causes of Truck Accidents

Trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionately high number of collisions. According to Freight Waves, “5,936 people were killed in crashes involving medium- and heavy-duty trucks weighing over 10,000 lbs. (weight classes 3-8), a 2% increase from 5,821 deaths in 2021. That compares with estimates by the agency last year showing a 17% increase between 2020 and 2021.” These accidents can be caused by several different factors.

  • Fatigue: One of the most common causes of truck accidents is fatigue. Truck drivers are often asked to work at all hours of the day and night, and they can easily become fatigued during long shifts.
  • Speeding: Another common cause of truck accidents is speeding. What many people don’t realize is that traveling the speed limit could be considered dangerous depending on the prevailing conditions.
  • Inexperience: Operating a commercial truck is substantially more difficult than driving a passenger vehicle. It is essential that the truck drivers have plenty of experience, especially before taking difficult routes.
  • Vehicle System Failures: Not every truck accident is the direct result of operator error. Many truck collisions are due to catastrophic failures with one or more parts of a truck.

It is essential that the cause of any truck accident be properly understood. This is why there should be a thorough investigation after any truck accident. An investigation may reveal that a truck driver was distracted or had hours-of-service violations that contributed to the collision. A Boston truck accident attorney can be enormously helpful in this regard. They can investigate all of the unique facts of any collision and give an informed position on what went wrong.
