Flatbed Truck Ended Up In The Lobby of the Shriver Job Corps Center in Devens After Crashing Through the Building

DEVENS, MASSACHUSETTS (July 24, 2025) – At least 13 people were injured in a Devens flatbed truck accident at the Shriver Job Corps Center campus on Jackson Road.

Middlesex County officials say the accident took place around 10:30 a.m. on Monday. For undetermined reasons, a flatbed truck drove through a fence on the perimeter of the Shriver Job Corps Center before crashing into the building’s lobby.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene to help all of the victims. A total of 7 people were hospitalized, and six more were treated by EMS at the scene.

Some of the injured were identified as Job Corps participants. Apparently, the truck hit a gas main before entering the building.

But the gas line was shut off before it could become a major hazard.

The Dangers of Commercial Truck Accidents

Commercial trucks account for a relatively small portion of the total vehicles on the road. But they are involved in a disproportionately high number of serious injury collisions. According to the IIHS;

“A total of 4,354 people died in large truck crashes in 2023. Sixteen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 65% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 17% were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists. The number of people who died in large truck crashes was 38% higher in 2023 than in 2009, when it was the lowest it has been since the collection of fatal crash data began in 1975.”

Trucks can be uniquely dangerous for several reasons.

  • Weight: A semi-truck can weigh 80,000 lbs. Even a low-impact collision can result in catastrophic injuries.
  • Blind Spots: Trucks have large blind spots all around the vehicle. They are particularly pronounced in the front and sides of the truck.
  • Stopping Distance: A fully loaded truck traveling at freeway speeds can take the length of a football field to come to a stop. This distance can increase dramatically with poor road or weather conditions.

Many truck drivers will need to get a commercial license. They must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid causing accidents. This necessitates that they maintain their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. Truck drivers may need to slow down well below the speed limit during certain road conditions.

Liability for Middlesex County Truck Accidents

Pursuant to M.G.L. c. 90, § 17, no person shall operate a motor vehicle on a roadway at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for traffic and road conditions. If a truck driver exits the roadway and collides with a fixed object, this may be construed as negligence.

Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a truck collision could extend beyond one driver. For example, the company that a truck driver works for could potentially bear some responsibility for a collision.

As a general principle, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent conduct of their employees as long as those employees were operating within the course and scope of their job duties. However, many companies hire truck drivers as “independent contractors” to limit their legal exposure.

What To Do After an Accident With a Commercial Truck

Certain steps must be taken after any truck accident.

  • Police Report: The police should be called to the scene of an accident as soon as possible so that they can begin an immediate investigation.
  • Evidence Preservation: The truck involved in the collision may need to be preserved as evidence. This is important if a truck accident was caused by a vehicle system failure like a tire blowout.
  • Surveillance Footage: It is common for truck accidents to be captured by surveillance cameras. Footage from these cameras can help paint a clear picture of what took place.
  • Legal Support: When a truck accident results in injuries, victims should seek the guidance of an experienced Boston truck accident attorney. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.

Being injured in a truck accident can be a traumatic experience with far-reaching implications for a person’s life. Victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries until several days or even weeks after a collision. The initial shock and subsequent adrenaline dump following an accident can mask the presence of injuries.

To make matters worse, victims may be left with high medical bills and need to take extensive periods of time away from work. This is why it is so important to have legal guidance after an accident. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to recover damages through a personal injury claim.
