Investigation Underway After 8-Year-Old Girl Airlifted to Mass Memorial Hospital After Milford Car Accident With Pickup Truck
MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS (September 21, 2025) – An eight-year-old girl was seriously injured in a Milford car accident near the intersection of Congress Street and Spruce Street.
Milford Police Department officials are saying that the collision took place around 4 PM on Thursday afternoon. The girl was walking with her father near their home when she was hit by the truck in the crosswalk.
One witness described hearing the collision and people screaming. The force of the impact caused the girl to be pulled underneath the truck.
An off-duty nurse at a nearby soccer field ran to help the victim. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the girl.
She was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment. The victim attended Woodland Elementary School. School officials are saying that counseling resources will become available for those affected by the crash.
Liability for Milford Pedestrian Accidents
Drivers in Massachusetts must use caution to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to M.G.L. c. 89 § 11, “When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be so to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk.” Drivers should take several actions to avoid colliding with any pedestrian.
- Speed: Drivers must reduce their vehicle to a safe speed when any pedestrian is in harm’s way. This may necessitate that they travel well below the speed limit.
- Horn: Drivers must use their horn when necessary to alert pedestrians of their presence.
- Scanning: Drivers must continuously scan the road ahead of them for pedestrians and other hazards. Accidents are much more likely to take place when drivers are distracted.
- Blind Spots: Drivers must check their blind spots before making turns at intersections. Pedestrians have a naturally small profile and can easily be overlooked.
Pedestrian accidents are often complex. The factors that could contribute to any pedestrian collision may take place long beforehand. Pickup trucks, vans, and other larger vehicles are routinely used for commercial purposes. If the driver of one of these vehicles was working at the time of the crash, their employer could be held at fault. In general, employers in Massachusetts can be held vicariously liable for the negligent actions of the workers that they hire.
Steps to Take After a Milford Pedestrian Collision
Many people are seriously injured or killed every year across Massachusetts and the United States in pedestrian accidents. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, “In 2021 some 7,388 pedestrians died and approximately 60,577 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States (NCSA, 2023c).” It is important that certain actions are taken after any pedestrian collision.
- Police Investigation: The police should be called to the scene of the collision so that they can conduct an investigation and take statements from witnesses.
- Medical Evaluation: Victims should seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible. A thorough medical examination can help reveal the presence of injuries that may not have been obvious.
- Trip Purpose: The circumstances leading up to the collision should be understood. In particular, it is important to know if a truck driver may have been working at the time of a crash.
- Legal Support: Any person injured in a Massachusetts car accident should seek the guidance of an experienced Boston pedestrian accident attorney. An attorney can take steps to hold the negligent driver accountable for their wrongful actions.
Pedestrian accidents are largely preventable. They often involve drivers that are simply not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. Unfortunately, drivers and their insurance providers will rarely accept responsibility for collisions. It is more likely that they will blame the victim for what went wrong. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a driver in Massachusetts may be able to see some measure of accountability in justice through a civil action.
