Semi-Truck Driver From Connecticut Lost Control Before Crossing Into Opposing Lanes of Traffic on Route 8 in Otis

OTIS, MASSACHUSETTS (March 26, 2026) – A man was injured in an Otis semi-truck accident on Route 8 by 1322 South Main Road.

Berkshire County officials are saying the accident took place around 9:00 AM on Thursday. A semi-truck driver from Connecticut was traveling down Route 8 when he lost control of his truck and entered southbound lanes of traffic.

That driver kept going until eventually colliding with a semi-truck traveling in the opposite direction. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.

One person traveling in the other truck was extricated from their vehicle and taken to the hospital to receive treatment. It remains unclear what may have caused the first semi-truck driver to lose control of their vehicle.

A full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Otis Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers must obtain a commercial driver’s license and are expected to operate with all of the diligence and care necessary to avoid accidents. Among other things, truck drivers must maintain a speed that would be safe given the prevailing conditions. According to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 90, Section 17, “No person operating a motor vehicle on any way shall run it at a rate of speed greater than is reasonable and proper, having regard to traffic and the use of the way and the safety of the public.” There are many rules and regulations related to how a truck driver is allowed to operate their vehicle.

  • Truck drivers are not allowed to operate their vehicle more than 11 hours in a given day.
  • Truck drivers cannot drive beyond a 14-hour work window.
  • Truck drivers must continuously adjust their speed to take into consideration traffic and weather conditions.
  • Truck drivers must perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of their vehicle.

If a truck driver crosses into opposing lanes of traffic and collides with another vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that departs from their lane and enters into opposing lanes of traffic before any accident. When a truck driver acts negligently and collides with another vehicle, their employer could be held at fault. However, many truck carriers employ truck drivers as “independent contractors” to avoid direct liability for a collision.

Steps to Take After Otis Semi-Truck Accidents

Driving a commercial truck remains a very dangerous profession, though there has been a reduction in serious collisions in recent years. According to Landline Media, “Workplace fatalities claimed the lives of 823 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in 2023. That was down significantly, by 12%, compared to the previous year. It also marked the fewest workplace deaths among truckers since 2016, when 786 truck drivers died on the job.” Truck drivers should take several actions if they are injured on the job.

  • Medical Treatment: Truck drivers should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Even seemingly minor injuries can turn out to be much more serious.
  • OSHA: Truck drivers that work as employees should report the accident to OSHA as early as possible. OSHA is responsible for investigating most workplace accidents.
  • Evidence Collection: All evidence associated with the crash should be collected and preserved. This will include any accident reports created.
  • Legal Review: Victims should consider all of their legal options with an experienced Boston truck accident attorney. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.

A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs. Even a low-impact collision can be absolutely devastating. It can be hard to know what to do after any crash. But one of the best things to do amidst this confusion is to speak with an attorney. An attorney can investigate your case free of cost and let you know how much compensation you may be entitled to. Any person injured in a truck accident may be able to pursue damages through a civil claim.
