Truck Wrecks Can Be Much Worse Than Car Wrecks

Being involved in a car crash in Boston is a traumatic experience, but when that collision involves a semi-truck, chances are the results were devastating. Victims face serious injuries, as well as the complete destruction of their vehicle. And the worst part might be that you do not know exactly what happened or who should be held accountable for your bills.

At DiBella Law Offices, P.C., we understand that you may have almost no memory of the events that led up to your injuries. Though this is frustrating, it is your mind’s way of coping with the immense stress of the situation. We are here to work on your behalf to understand the events of that day, so that whoever caused the accident can be held accountable. Call (617) 870-0907 today to schedule your free consultation with one of our Boston truck accident lawyers.

What Is a Jackknife Accident?

The massive size and weight of a semi-truck, along with the pivot point where the cab and the trailer connect, are what create the potential for a jackknife accident. In some cases, when the truck is braking, the cab slows down but the weight and momentum of the trailer cannot be slowed as quickly. This causes the trailer to slide or skid sideways and move to the side of the cab, rather than remaining in a straight line behind it. In the worst cases, the cab and the trailer form a 90-degree angle that resembles a folding knife. Any cars to the side can be crushed underneath.

Causes of a Jackknife

Weather conditions can contribute to a jackknife, if the trailer slides on icy or wet pavement. In addition, a truck can jackknife on a curve if there are extremely high crosswinds. The truck driver can cause a jackknife if he is driving too fast on a curve or slams on the brakes too quickly.

Ultimately, it is the truck driver’s responsibility to maintain control of the vehicle in any weather conditions. This may mean driving slower than the posted speed limit in high wind or rain, or when the truck is carrying an extremely heavy load that requires added stopping distance. It may mean stopping altogether if it’s just too risky to drive.

Compensation for Victims of Truck Accidents

The weight and size of a big rig often result in the rig driving over some or all of the car that it hits. This impact often crushes the car and inflicts a great deal of trauma on the occupants. Spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, loss of limbs, and extensive lacerations are all common in jackknife accidents.

As experienced truck accident lawyers, we know these types of injuries can require years to overcome and result in astronomical medical expenses. At DiBella Law Offices, P.C., our job is to secure the compensation you deserve so that financial concerns are not on your mind as you focus on healing. That compensation may include:

  • Current and future medical expenses related to the accident
  • Cost of rehabilitation or long-term care
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of potential earnings
  • Permanent disability
  • Property damage
  • Counseling or therapy
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Depending on the circumstances of the accident, the court could also award punitive damages to punish the driver for bad behavior

There are many factors that could have contributed to the crash that caused your injuries. With over a decade of experience working for Boston truck accident victims, DiBella Law Offices, P.C., know that the truck owner, the truck driver, the manufacturer, or even another driver could be partially or completely to blame. We will work with a variety of truck accident specialists to determine the cause and best course of action to secure the compensation you deserve.
