Megan Whiting, 27, Died in Northfield Police Shooting Following Domestic Disturbance at Apartment on Vine Street

NORTHFIELD, NEW HAMPSHIRE (April 20, 2026) – A 27-year-old woman identified as Megan Whiting has tragically died in a Northfield shooting at an apartment on 20 Vine Street.

Northfield police are saying that the incident took place around 12:12 AM on Monday. Police received a call that a woman struck another woman at the property with a fire extinguisher.

That person was allegedly smashing objects and breaking a window. Officers arrived about six minutes later and encountered Megan Whiting. She was allegedly holding a knife before officers opened fire and shot her. Paramedics were called to the scene of the shooting to help her.

Sadly, Megan Whiting was pronounced dead at the scene. A full investigation into the deadly police encounter remains ongoing at this time.

Understanding Legal Liability in Northfield, New Hampshire Police Shootings

Police officers across New Hampshire have a legal obligation to use the least amount of force necessary for any given encounter. A police department can be liable for the excessive force of their officers under 42 U.S. Code § 1983. When determining whether or not any instance of force was justified, it matters whether or not that force was objectively reasonable given the circumstances. Among other things, the decisions that officers made leading up to the deadly encounter should be taken into consideration.

  • Police officers should work to de-escalate any type of encounter with a suspect who may be aggressive.
  • Police officers should work to determine if the suspect may be in the midst of a mental health crisis.
  • Police officers should use distance and deploy less-lethal alternatives when this is feasible.

Police officers should only use lethal force as an absolute measure of last resort. But in far too many situations, this does not take place. Officers may rush into an encounter without fully taking into consideration what is going on. Even if a police shooting seemed justified in the moment, it may not have been given the totality of circumstances leading up to the encounter. This is why it is so important that all of these incidents are properly investigated.

Protecting Your Rights: Essential Steps Following a Northfield Police Incident

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured during police encounters each year across the United States. According to the Law Enforcement Epidemiology Project, “For every death, there are approximately 35-60 non-fatal injuries that require treatment in a hospital; 12.6% of the civilians suffered traumatic brain injuries, which have potential long-term severe outcomes.” Certain actions should be taken after any New Hampshire police shooting.

  • All of the body camera footage from officers involved should be requested.
  • Medical records related to injuries should be preserved.
  • The circumstances leading up to the encounter should be investigated.
  • The history of misconduct allegations against responding officers should be reviewed.
  • The family of any person who died in a Northfield police shooting should seek an independent review by a team experienced in civil rights claims.

Losing a loved one in a police shooting can be absolutely devastating. To make matters worse, the police will rarely be transparent about what actually took place. When police departments do investigate their own officers, they will inevitably find that those officers did nothing wrong. The family of any person who died in a police shooting may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil action.
