Fatal accident in Derry, NH

Larry Niles Jr. Died in Collision With Chevy Express Van on Interstate 93 in Derry

DERRY, NEW HAMPSHIRE (March 12, 2026) – A man identified as Larry Niles Jr. has tragically died in a Derry car accident on Interstate 93 at mile marker 10.

New Hampshire State Police say the collision occurred shortly before 2:00 PM on March 9. Larry Niles Jr. was operating a 2007 Ford Focus when it became disabled in the right breakdown lane of the interstate.

A 2015 Chevrolet Express van failed to stop in time and collided with the victim. He was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet Express van was reportedly not hurt in the collision. Sadly, Larry Niles Jr. was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

No charges were filed immediately after the collision. Authorities are asking anyone with more information to reach out to them.

Liability for Derry Car Accidents

Every driver in New Hampshire has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles. This requires that they operate their vehicles at a safe speed and maintain a safe distance at all times. A number of factors could contribute to a car accident.

  • Inclement Weather: Poor weather conditions could easily contribute to a car accident. In particular, rain can dramatically increase the stopping distance of any vehicle on the roadway.
  • Poor Road Conditions: Any type of defect with a roadway could contribute to a crash. This includes potholes that may cause a driver to lose control.
  • Fatigue: Fatigue can play a critical role in collisions. In fact, some studies have suggested that driving while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting any vehicle in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Even if a vehicle is completely stationary on the road, this does not relieve a driver of their duty of care to slow down to avoid a collision. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver who rear-ends a vehicle in their own lane of traffic. If a van was being used for a commercial purpose at the time of a crash, its employer could be held at fault.

Steps to Take After Derry Car Accidents

A number of different actions should be taken after any car accident in Derry.

  • Police: The police should be called to the scene as early as possible so that they can begin investigating.
  • Trip Purpose: If a van or pickup truck was involved in an accident, the nature and purpose of the driver’s trip should be understood. There are liability implications when drivers are working and involved in a crash.
  • Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the car accident should be preserved. This includes vehicle fragments and photos of the accident site.
  • Independent Review: There should be an independent review into the circumstances of the crash. This investigation can help reveal all liable parties.

Car accidents are highly preventable. In the vast majority of cases, they involve drivers speeding or otherwise not paying attention to traffic ahead. It is important that victims of collisions understand that they are protected by various laws. They can pursue some measure of justice through a civil action. Family members of any person who died also have rights. They can seek accountability through a wrongful death claim.
