Honda Accord Driver Died After a Head-On Collision With a Pickup Towing a Trailer on Route 20 at Edgemere Boulevard
SHREWSBURY, MASSACHUSETTS (October 26, 2026) – One person has tragically died in a Shrewsbury car accident on Route 20 at the intersection with Edgemere Boulevard.
Shrewsbury police officials are saying that the collision occurred around 11:51 a.m. on Monday, October 26. According to police, a westbound 2011 Honda Accord and an eastbound 2019 Ford F-250 towing a trailer collided head-on on Hartford Turnpike.
A 2005 Kenworth oil tanker that was waiting in the eastbound lane to turn left onto Edgemere Boulevard reportedly sustained secondary damage.
Shrewsbury police, Shrewsbury firefighters and Worcester EMS paramedics responded to the scene. Officers found the driver of the Honda unresponsive with serious injuries and began life-saving measures before the driver was taken to a local hospital. Despite these efforts, the driver was later pronounced deceased.
Police have not publicly identified the driver who died. No injuries to the drivers of the pickup truck or the tanker have been reported, and no charges have been announced.
The crash is being investigated by Shrewsbury police, the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) Crash Reconstruction Team and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Shrewsbury Car Accidents
Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 89, Section 1 (M.G.L. c. 89, § 1) requires drivers who meet other vehicles on a road to reasonably keep to the right of the traveled way so that each vehicle can pass without interference.
Courts will consider a number of factors when evaluating liability for any car accident.
- Lane Position: Investigators will look at where each vehicle was in the roadway at the moment of impact and whether either one crossed the center line.
- Speed: The speed of each vehicle, and whether it was reasonable for conditions on Route 20, can affect both fault and the severity of a crash.
- Vehicle Data: Event data recorders and crash reconstruction can show braking, speed and steering in the seconds before a collision.
- Surveillance: Nearby business cameras, dash cameras and witness accounts can help establish the sequence of events.
A driver who crosses into an opposing lane of travel may be found negligent for failing to keep to the right as the law requires. Officials have not said how the two vehicles came to collide. When a vehicle involved in a crash is being driven for work, the driver’s employer may also share liability through vicarious liability.
Preventing Head-On Collisions on Massachusetts Roads
Far too many people are seriously injured or killed every year in preventable crashes where vehicles meet front to front. According to one report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), “Frontal impacts accounted for 59% of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2024.”
Drivers can help prevent head-on collisions by taking these steps:
- Stay centered in your lane and avoid drifting toward the center line, especially on curves.
- Put the phone away and keep your eyes on the road.
- Slow down for conditions and leave extra room around vehicles waiting to turn.
- Never drive while impaired or drowsy.
- Make sure trailers are properly hitched, loaded and lit before towing.
When a driver’s carelessness causes a head-on collision, the families of those killed may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
