WESTBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS (December 15, 2025) – A pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a semi truck on the Massachusetts Turnpike, not far from Mile Marker 103.

Worcester County officials are saying that the accident took place on Tuesday afternoon. A pedestrian was hit by a tractor-trailer for undetermined reasons.

They were transported to the hospital to receive additional medical care. Few details have been released regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash.

A full investigation into the Westborough truck accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Westborough Semi-Truck Accidents

Determining liability and proving fault in a truck accident can be complex. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the road, this could be considered negligence. If a truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could also potentially be held at fault. For example, a truck driver may have been traveling to deliver packages on a scheduled route.

They are expected to operate with a great deal of caution, given the inherent dangers associated with operating a large commercial truck. This necessitates that they maintain a safe speed at all times.

According to M.G.L. c. 90, § 17, “No person operating a motor vehicle on any way shall run it at a rate of speed greater than is reasonable and proper, having regard to traffic and the use of the way and the safety of the public.”

Truck drivers should take several measures to avoid collisions.

  • Follow Distance: Truck drivers must maintain a safe distance between all vehicles ahead of them. This distance should be increased during times of heavy traffic or inclement weather.
  • Defensive Driving: Truck drivers should continuously check their blind spots and anticipate dangerous maneuvers from other drivers on the roadway.
  • Fatigue: Truck drivers should take periodic rest breaks and follow all hours-of-service rules.
  • Loads: Truck drivers should ensure that their loads are properly secured and balanced. Many truck accidents are due to improper loading.

Every driver must be particularly cautious when encountering pedestrians. Drivers must take steps to avoid collisions with pedestrians, even in situations when they are outside of a marked crosswalk.

Common Injuries Associated With Truck Accidents

A fully loaded commercial truck can weigh 80,000 pounds. These vehicles can be incredibly dangerous, even at lower speeds. According to the IIHS, “Most deaths in large truck crashes are passenger vehicle occupants. The main problem is the vulnerability of people traveling in smaller vehicles. Trucks often weigh 20-30 times as much as passenger cars and are taller with greater ground clearance, which can result in smaller vehicles underriding trucks in crashes.” Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken Bones: The force of a truck accident can cause a person to jolt forward violently. Broken bones are a common result of these incidents. Fractures in the hands and wrists are especially common.
  • Organ Damage: The blunt force trauma of being hit by a truck can cause major internal injuries. Many victims suffer serious organ damage, including collapsed lungs.
  • Head Injuries: If a truck accident causes a person to hit their head on the ground or in the vehicle, this could cause a traumatic brain injury.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Another common injury associated with truck accidents is spinal cord trauma. These are among the most severe types of injuries that victims can suffer from. They may result in temporary or permanent paralysis.

Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are much more likely to suffer catastrophic injuries if they are hit by a truck. Truck drivers are supposed to slow down when pedestrians are nearby, but this often does not happen. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have legal rights. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
