Alfredo Alves, 23, Died After a Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash With an Off-Duty Hanover Police Officer in Brockton

BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS (February 23, 2026) – A 23-year-old pedestrian identified as Alfredo Alves has tragically died in a Brockton car accident near Battle Street and Cross Street.

Plymouth County officials say the accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Monday. Alfredo Alves was walking when he was struck by a 2022 Ford Explorer SUV.

Paramedics were called to the accident scene to help the victim. Despite life-saving care at the hospital, Alfredo Alves was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV did not remain at the scene of the collision. A passenger in the SUV later came forward and identified the driver involved in the crash.

That person has been identified as a Hanover Police Department official. Authorities believe the suspect was off-duty at the time of the crash.

He has since been arrested and placed on leave.

Liability for Brockton Pedestrian Accidents

Every driver in Massachusetts has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway. To that end, drivers must operate their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. According to Mass. General Laws c. 90, § 17, “No person operating a motor vehicle on any way shall run it at a rate of speed greater than is reasonable and proper, having regard to traffic and the use of the way and the safety of the public.” There are many ways that a driver may have acted negligently prior to hitting a pedestrian.

  • Scanning: A driver may have failed to scan the road ahead of them for pedestrians and other potential hazards.
  • Blind Spots: A driver may have failed to check their blind spots before making a turn at an intersection.
  • Intoxication: A driver may have been intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.
  • Horn: A driver may have failed to use their horn to alert pedestrians of their presence.

When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. If that same driver leaves the scene of an injury collision, they could also face criminal sanctions in addition to civil liability. Civil liability for any car accident may extend beyond any one driver that is held at fault. If a driver was working in some capacity at the time of a crash, their employer could also bear some level of responsibility.

Steps To Take After Brockton Pedestrian Accidents

Accidents involving police officers are actually much more common than many people realize. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 198 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (57%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for 23% of the total, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 11%, and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 7% of the deaths.” Multiple steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • All medical records related to the collision should be collected and reviewed.
  • If a police officer was involved in the crash, it should be determined if they were working in some capacity when the accident took place.
  • Surveillance footage that may have captured the collision should be sought.
  • The family of any person who died should seek an independent review of the crash with an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Pedestrian accidents tend to be highly preventable. In many cases, drivers are not paying attention to the road ahead of them. There is truly no excuse for a driver to flee the scene of an injury collision. Unfortunately, drivers and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility in the event of a fatal crash. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident will be able to seek some measure of justice and accountability through a civil action called a wrongful death claim.
