Juan “Sebastian” Alvarez Hospitalized Following Collision While Riding Moped on Revere Street
REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS (August 16, 2026) – A moped rider identified as Juan Alvarez was seriously injured in a Revere car accident along Revere Street.
Suffolk County officials are saying that the accident occurred on Friday afternoon. Juan Alvarez was riding his moped on his way to pick up a friend when he was struck by a vehicle that made a left-hand turn.
The force of the impact threw the victim into the air and caused him to violently land onto the street. First responders were called to the scene of the accident, which was right next to a convenience store.
Witnesses also rushed to the scene to help the injured victim. Juan Alvarez was hospitalized at Mass General to receive treatment for broken bones and other injuries.
It remains unclear if the driver involved will receive any citations.

Liability for Revere Car Accidents
Massachusetts law requires that road users operate with the reasonable care and prudence necessary to avoid any collisions. In particular, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 14 requires that any driver, intending to make a left turn into an alley or road, must first yield the right of way to any vehicle that is close enough so as to pose an immediate hazard. Courts will consider numerous factors when evaluating liability for any collision between a vehicle and a moped.
- Right-of-Way: It matters whether or not a driver making a left turn had a green arrow and whether or not the other vehicle involved was sufficiently close.
- Speed: Vehicle speed and sightlines can also be taken into consideration when evaluating fault for a traffic collision.
- Recorded Evidence: Police reports and photographs can help establish the events leading up to any collision.
- Proper Lookout: Another important consideration is whether a driver was maintaining a proper lookout before initiating a turn. Many left-hand collisions involved drivers that are distracted.
When a driver makes an unprotected left turn into the path of another vehicle that hits them, this could be construed as negligence. Consider, for example, Mari v. DeLong, 62 Mass. App. Ct. 87 (Massachusetts Appeals Court 2004). The plaintiff in that case was traveling through an intersection when they were hit by a truck that made a left turn directly into their path. The Appeals Court held that any driver attempting to cross opposing traffic must continue yielding until the turn can be made safely. However, drivers that are traveling through an intersection with the right of way must continue to exercise reasonable care.
Preventing Moped Accidents in Massachusetts
Much like motorcyclists, moped riders lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are particularly vulnerable in the event of a crash. The Massachusetts DOT reported that 71 motorcycle operators died in preventable car accidents across the state in 2022 alone. This was a 22% increase from the previous year. The NHTSA has indicated that 602,028 motorcyclists died in collisions for the year 2024. There are a number of steps that can be taken to prevent moped accidents.
- Traffic Calming Measures: Cities can install additional speed bumps, stop signs, street lights, and other traffic calming measures to reduce instances of speeding that could contribute to these collisions.
- Enforcement: Police officers should heavily enforce traffic violations that are likely to lead to collisions with moped riders and pedestrians.
- Visibility: Any person operating a moped should consider increasing their visibility by wearing reflective clothing.
- Scanning: Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them and be particularly cautious at any intersection prior to making a left turn.
The vast majority of moped accidents are totally preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are not sufficiently scanning the road ahead of them. Unfortunately, negligent drivers and their insurance providers are not likely to accept responsibility when they cause a collision that leaves someone seriously injured. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a driver is able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the medical bills and losses associated with the collision.
