Lucitha Blanc, 25, Jenelle, 2, Badly Injured in Suspected Gas Explosion at Three-Story Home in Taunton

TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS (February 26, 2026) – A 25-year-old woman identified as Lucitha Blanc and her 2-year-old daughter Jenelle were injured in a Taunton gas explosion at home at 78 Plain Street.

Bristol County officials are saying that the accident took place around 10:00 AM on Wednesday. Firefighters were called to the scene after getting reports of an explosion and subsequent fire at the property.

Lucitha Blanc and Jenelle were badly injured in the blast and taken to separate hospitals. The mother was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, and her daughter was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

The fire department is currently investigating the blast. There is an ongoing suspicion that it was the result of a gas leak. Eversource was called to the home to turn off utilities.

You can help support Lucitha Blanc and Jenelle through GoFundMe. According to the online fundraiser, “My sister’s next door neighbor and her family are facing an incredibly difficult time after a devastating house fire in their apartment. The fire not only destroyed much of what they owned, but also resulted in the mom and her two-year-old daughter being sent to the hospital. It’s heartbreaking to see a family in our community go through such a traumatic event, especially when young children are involved.”

Liability for Taunton Gas Explosion Accidents

Apartment owners in Massachusetts have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This necessitates that they abide by all fire and building codes. Violations of state common law and the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code could impose liability in the event of a gas explosion. In particular, property owners must take action if they have actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their premises. There are many ways that a property may have been in a dangerous condition so as to create the risk of a gas explosion.

  • Gas Piping: An apartment may have improperly installed gas piping.
  • Response: An apartment owner may have failed to take action after learning about a gas leak.
  • Ventilation: An apartment owner may have failed to provide adequate ventilation in boiler rooms where gas can accumulate.
  • Emergency Shutoff: An apartment owner may have failed to install or maintain gas shutoff valves.

Gas explosions are often highly complex events. The factors that contribute to an explosion may take place hours, days, or even months beforehand. It is also possible that a gas company could be directly liable for any gas explosion. Much like property owners, utility companies have a legal obligation to maintain their lines in a safe condition. If a utility company fails to take reasonable steps to prevent gas explosions, they could be held at fault through a civil action.

Steps to Take After Taunton Gas Explosions

Natural gas leaks remain a leading cause of preventable explosions and fires across the United States. These incidents have only increased in recent years. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “The number of structure fires involving a flammable gas as the material of the item first ignited has increased over the past decade. The raw number of incidents as well as the percentage of these fires have increased compared to all structure fires.” Multiple steps should be taken after any gas explosion accident.

  • Incident Report: Gas explosions will be investigated by multiple agencies across Massachusetts. This includes local fire departments and law enforcement agencies. Any report that is created related to the incident should be collected and preserved.
  • Medical Treatment: Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Failing to seek ongoing care can cause major health and legal complications down the road.
  • Independent Investigation: Any person injured in a Massachusetts gas explosion should seek an independent investigation by a team experienced in premises liability claims. This team can help identify all liable parties and take steps to preserve key pieces of evidence.

It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured in a gas explosion. Victims are routinely left with catastrophic injuries and high medical bills. They may also have to contend with the loss of all of their earthly possessions. To add insult to injury, apartment owners will virtually never accept responsibility if one of their tenants is injured at their property. This is why legal counsel is so valuable in these types of cases. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a utility company or a property owner may be able to seek some measure of justice and accountability through a civil claim.
