New Hampshire State Police Investigating Swanzey Pedestrian Collision On Monadnock Highway

SWANZEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE (September 16, 2026) – A 51-year-old man was injured in a Swanzey semi-truck accident on the Monadnock Highway just north of the Cheshire Fairgrounds.

Cheshire County officials are saying that the collision occurred on Saturday, September 12. The pedestrian was attempting to cross the roadway when they were struck by a tractor-trailer truck.

Paramedics responded to the scene of the collision to help the victim. The man was transported to the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene before being moved to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

Police interviewed the driver of the semi-truck who remained at the scene. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Swanzey Semi-Truck Accidents

New Hampshire law requires that all drivers use caution and care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian that they encounter. Pursuant to RSA 265:37, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian or any person propelling a human-powered vehicle and shall give an audible signal when necessary and shall exercise proper precaution upon observing any child or any obviously confused, incapacitated or intoxicated person.” There are multiple factors that could contribute to any semi-truck accident.

  • Trucks have large blind spots that can easily obscure the presence of pedestrians.
  • Trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and be incredibly difficult to stop at freeway speeds.
  • Truck drivers are often pushed to complete their routes as quickly as possible and may adopt unsafe driving habits.
  • Truck drivers may be traveling in a speed that would be unsafe given the prevailing conditions.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. This is true even if a pedestrian was outside of a marked crosswalk. Consider, for example, Bellacome v. Bailey, 121 N.H. 23 (1981). That case involved a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in Dover. The plaintiff’s legal counsel argued that the driver failed to maintain a proper lookout and exercise reasonable care to prevent the collision.

Common Injuries Associated With New Hampshire Truck Accidents

Trucks can be incredibly dangerous and are involved in many serious collisions each year. According to data from the FMCSA, there were 171,274 crashes involving large trucks and buses in 2024 alone. These accidents caused an estimated 4,872 fatalities and another 87,888 injuries. Victims of semi-truck accidents tend to suffer many serious injuries.

  • It is relatively common for pedestrians to sustain broken bones.
  • Head injuries can be especially dangerous and potentially life-threatening, such as skull fractures.
  • Spinal cord injuries are also incredibly dangerous and may lead to temporary or even permanent paralysis.
  • Organ damage and other internal injuries are another major possibility and often require emergency care.

Not all of the injuries associated with any semi-truck accidents are going to be immediately obvious. Even if a person’s physical injuries completely heal, victims are often left with long-term psychological trauma that can manifest through post-traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms of PTSD can include recurring nightmares, anxiety, and depression. Any person harmed by the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil action.
