On-Demand Water Heater Identified As Source Of Plymouth Co Poisoning Accident That Left Two People Hospitalized

PLYMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE (February 21, 2026) – Two people sustained life-threatening injuries in a Plymouth carbon monoxide poisoning accident at a home on Tenney Brook Road.

Grafton County officials are saying that the accident took place around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Paramedics received reports of people feeling sick inside of the home.

When firefighters arrived, they detected readings of CO over 500 ppm. Two residents at the property were transported to the hospital to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters also shut off the home’s gas supply and ventilated the building until they reached a 0 ppm reading. The source of the CO gas was traced to an on-demand water heater.

Liability for Plymouth Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Accidents

Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. They must test their products and all of the ways that they are likely to be used and even misused. If a water heater or other consumer device has a propensity to malfunction and leak carbon monoxide, this may be due to some underlying defect with the device. There are a number of potential issues with any water heater that could cause it to leak CO gas.

  • Incomplete Combustion: A water heater may have a malfunctioning gas control valve or a misaligned pilot assembly.
  • Venting Systems: The venting systems for the device may be assembled at an improper slope, or it may have become disconnected from the vent connector.
  • Draft Hood: The draft hood for the heater may be missing or improperly assembled.

If a water heater or other home device malfunctions and causes carbon monoxide poisoning, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Product liability claims are typically pursued as a strict liability offense. In other words, defendants will typically be liable if a defective product injures a consumer, even if they exercise a great deal of care to avoid harm. Depending on the jurisdiction where any claim is being processed, courts may consider different tests to determine whether or not a certain design was actually defective.

Steps to Take After Plymouth Carbon Monoxide Accidents

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas and can be extremely dangerous in high concentrations. According to USA Facts, “Each year in the US, over 100,000 people visit an emergency room for accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, with tens of thousands hospitalized.” Multiple actions should be taken after any carbon monoxide poisoning accident.

  • Medical Attention: Victims should seek medical attention as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with carbon monoxide poisoning will not be immediately obvious.
  • Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the accident should be collected and preserved. This will include the potential source of the CO leak.
  • Legal Support: Any person injured in a carbon monoxide accident should carefully review their legal options with an experienced Boston personal injury attorney.

The health effects from a carbon monoxide poisoning accident can be long-lasting. Many people have reported long-term neurological complications. It is important that the victims of these accidents understand that they do have legal rights. They may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim. Damages in a simple claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
