Investigation Underway After Multiple People Injured in Collision With Tractor-Trailer Truck on Route 128 North in Newton
NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS (February 2, 2026) – At least two people were injured in a Newton tractor-trailer truck accident on Route 128 North near mile marker 38.
Middlesex County officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:15 AM on Friday. A tractor-trailer was involved in a collision with a Toyota Corolla and another vehicle.
Photos of the accident site showed the Corolla with extensive damage. The truck was blocking all lanes of the interstate. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all the victims.
At least two people were taken to the hospital. It remains unclear if the truck driver involved will face any citations for the collision.
Liability for Newton Semi-Truck Accidents
If a truck driver fails to maintain a safe distance and collides with another vehicle in their own lane of traffic, they could be held at fault through a civil claim. Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a truck accident could extend beyond the truck driver who is held legally responsible. The company a truck driver worked for could also be legally responsible for a crash. Generally speaking, employers can be vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who were performing their job duties.
Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with a great deal of caution to avoid collisions. According to 720 CMR, § 9.06 – Operation of Vehicles, “The driver of a vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard to the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon and condition of the highway.”
There are several reasons that trucks can be particularly dangerous for drivers of smaller vehicles, such as:
- Weight: A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh 80,000 pounds. This makes these vehicles dangerous even at lower speeds.
- Stopping Distance: When a semi-truck is traveling at freeway speeds, it can take them the length of two football fields to come to a complete stop.
- Height: Semi-trucks have a high ground clearance, which poses a risk that vehicles underride the truck in the event of a crash.
- Turning Radius: Semi-trucks have a much larger turning radius than other vehicles. This makes them much more likely to be involved in side-impact collisions.
Steps to Take After Newton Semi-Truck Accidents
Many people are seriously injured or killed every year in accidents with commercial trucks. A number of these collisions involve younger drivers. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, “Of the 5,760 drivers of large trucks involved in fatal crashes in 2022, 420 (7 percent) were 25 years of age or younger, and 406 (7 percent) were 66 years of age or older. In comparison, 5 (2 percent) of the 211 drivers of buses in fatal crashes were 25 years of age or younger, and 37 (18 percent) were 66 years of age or older.” Certain steps should be taken after any truck accident.
- Contact Police: The police should be called to the scene of the accident as early as possible so they can begin an investigation.
- Visit the Hospital: Anyone injured in the collision should seek medical assistance immediately. This is important even when victims feel mostly all right after a crash.
- Preserve Evidence: All of the evidence associated with the crash should be preserved. Photos of the accident site should be taken, and any footage they may have captured of the accident should be sought.
- Contact an Experienced Lawyer: Victims of truck accidents should contact an experienced truck accident attorney. An attorney can take steps to preserve evidence and protect your rights.
There’s a tremendous peace of mind that comes with having an experienced attorney help after any truck accident. Truck companies and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility if one of their drivers causes a crash. They are more likely to blame victims and other third parties. Any person who is injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim.
